Kaye's story
Imagine losing over a year of your life, not knowing who you are or where you had been, only to find out you were convicted of arson and imprisoned for eight months. That is what has happened to Kaye Greenway, but with the help of Melbourne Citymission she has been able to find herself again.
Before being assigned a case worker, from Melbourne Citymission’s Justice Programs, Kaye’s life was a void — she lived with no recollection of the events or experiences she had been through.
Kaye says that ‘there was a time when I just wanted to die’. With Melbourne Citymission's help she has settled down ‘to find who I am and to be settled. I just want to be settled,’ she says.
Now that she has this stability she has been able to find out ‘what I really want to do’, which is publish her self-illustrated children’s books. She also wants to leave behind her past, where she was the victim of violence and abuse.
‘I feel like I have made a promise somewhere along the line that this is what I will do,’ she says. ‘It overrides everything I am and have been told that I’ve done. This is me, a writer of children’s books.’
A Fine Arts graduate of RMIT University, Kaye demonstrates a wonderful sense of colour and imagination in her illustrations and storylines that match. Some of her stories hold a deeper meaning as she releases her emotions through artistic expression.
Kaye says that Melbourne Citymission helped her get back onto her feet, ‘not through monetary or material support, but just by being there’.
‘They’ve helped me tune in and get past the anger and find a quieter part of me.’
