Palliative Care

At Palliative Care, volunteers are part of a team which supports people with a terminal illness and their carers. Our volunteers help them to achieve the best possible quality of life at this significant stage of their lives. As Palliative care volunteers provide emotional, practical and spiritual support to clients and their carers, volunteers must undergo an extensive training program. Training includes communication and listening skills, loss and grief, spirituality and a basic understanding of life-threatening illness. On –going education is provided and volunteers are offered support from the coordinator of volunteers and the interdisciplinary team.

Volunteers at palliative care offer help through respite sitting, companionship, shopping, transport, gentle massage, bereavement follow up, and administration and office duties. Melbourne Citymission Palliative Care cares for people living at home in the cities of Hume, Moreland, Darebin and Yarra.
