Snow trip to Lake Mountain
Recently participants from The Western Young People’s Independent Network (WYPIN) enjoyed a trip to Lake Mountain for a fun-filled adventure day in the snow. WYPIN, auspiced by Melbourne Citymission, works with young people of refugee and migrant backgrounds who are between 12 and 25 years old. WYPIN was set up to challenge racism and social issues in the community and is a service for people connected to the Western Suburb of Melbourne.
WYPIN in partnership with the Good Shepherd, New Hope Foundation, the Department of Human Services and the Victoria Police is involved in organising recreation activities for young people from the Refugee Minor Program. The activity days aim to provide an opportunity for young people to develop new social connections and learn more about different services and places you can visit on a day trip. The activities are supported by some WYPIN leaders, who assist in organising the activity and are role models on the day.
Recently 25 young people, four WYPIN leaders and eight staff members participated in the trip to Lake Mountain. For many of the young people, it was their first time to see snow and the wide smiles and screams of excitement were wonderful to see! All the young people got involved in tobogganing and the day ended with some snow man making and of course – a snow ball fight!
