Step Ahead
The Step Ahead program supports young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness by linking them to affordable housing and an integrated support program.
Who does the program support?
Young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
How does the program work?
We offer young people housing in furnished units for up to three years where they receive ongoing case management and a structured program of learning, which focuses on:
- education and work
- independent living
- personal and social issues
- community and leisure activities.
Step Ahead also runs and develops pre-employment projects such as WHEELS at SCEEC. This project focuses on supporting young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to gain important life skills that will help them to link into employment and/or training.
Step Ahead also supports young people to enter education, employment and training pathways. Support is provided via skill development, which can include:
- resume and cover letter writing
- help with job searches
- occupation/qualification or course information
- interview skills and techniques training.
Step Ahead can also broker funds through Creating Connections Educational and Employment Pathways (CEEP) (maximum $1200) for young people aged 15 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and who are supported by homelessness assistance service (SAAP) to access education and employment options.

We have also developed a resource for the North West suburbs of Melbourne to help you find student housing.
