Pastoral care

Pastoral care is an important aspect of the work of Melbourne Citymission. It seeks to address the spiritual concerns that people bring with them as they access services. It exists to promote a holistic view of people, who we believe are more than just services users, but people who are seeking to make sense of their lives and the world in which they live. It is available to all clients and families, regardless of religious affiliation or personal beliefs.

As a ‘person centred’ discipline, pastoral care supports people in the exploration of all dimensions of their lives, including culture, identity, community, vocation, faith and beliefs. Attention is given to significant life experiences such as grief and loss, trauma, celebrating or honouring significant life events, relationships and rituals.

Working with management and staff Pastoral care is an integral part of our service to clients in Disability Services, Children’s Services, Aged Care, Palliative Care, Community Development and Homelessness Services. In addition, Melbourne Citymission offers support and supervision to the pastoral care worker at Eltham High School.

Pastoral care also exists to raise awareness of the spiritual dimension of the work of the organisation, its intersection with deeper questions about life, and the opportunity to foster wellbeing in the lives of individuals and communities.

Pastoral care

Pastoral care is a person-centred, holistic approach to care that complements the support offered by other Melbourne Citymission programs and services. It pays particular attention to spiritual care of the people we work with and support.

Pastoral care workers, through skilled companionship, provide people with support not only to confront particular situations, but also to explore the possibilities for personal and spiritual growth present within them.

Pastoral care workers are located in each of the Melbourne Citymission regions and are available to all clients and families, regardless of religious affiliation or personal beliefs.
