The Affirming Families Program
If your child is living with a disability and acts in a way that is worrying or hard to control, we can support you. Melbourne Citymission acknowledges that there are times when a child living with a disability, may present behaviours that can be worrying or hard to deal with. Affirming Families works with children and their families to develop a management plan to modify the behaviours in the home and in other settings. We work in partnership with parents and their children to achieve their identified goals.
Is this program for me?
We can work with you if:
- your child is aged from 6 to 16 and has a disability
- you live in Melbourne’s north and west.
How can the program assist me?
We can:
- help to find out why your child behaves in the way they do
- help him or her to behave in another way
- suggest actions that may prevent your child’s behaviour happening in the first place
- help you respond to your child’s behaviour in a positive and non-combative manner
- suggest ways that you can simply and easily change your child’s environment.
We can also help your child to express him or herself differently.
Our program can help in day-to-day activities such as meal times, sleeping, shopping, going to the park and visiting family and friends.
How does the program work?
We will:
- visit you in your home and get to know your child
- talk to you and your family about your child’s behaviour and what you would like to change
- discuss with you your ideas about how best to cope with your child’s behaviour
- support you to address your child’s behaviour in the way you want.
