Placed Based Services — Whittlesea
As a member of the Whittlesea Community Futures Partnership, we are working in partnership with key stakeholders in the area to plan and implement a range of community development initiatives. This includes the Thomastown Main Street Precinct development, where we are working in partnership to develop new options for the Early Years on the Precinct.
Melbourne Citymission is also working with Vic Urban, Whittlesea Council and the Hornery Institute in the establishment of a Living and Learning Centre in Aurora, Epping North.
In Lalor we have been working in partnership with key stakeholders to establish a Community Hub at the Lalor Park Primary School.
The Community Hub aims to:
- create an environment at the school where families with young children can participate in a range of activities that support parents to socialise and engage with the school community
- provide opportunities for children and families to develop personal and community connections
- facilitate access to information about parenting and services.
In areas of locational disadvantage and emerging communities the above initiatives promote:
- social inclusion
- early intervention and prevention.

Locational Disadvantage
Using a community development approach, our Place Based Services seek to enhance the lives of children and their families who are living in under-resourced and / or disadvantaged areas. All programs promote empowerment — we listen to people and work with them to develop responses that meet their need. Through the advocacy element of our programs we work to develop social policies that promote equitable access to resources to maximize participation in community life.
