The turn of the century
| By the turn of the century, Melbourne Citymission’s work had broadened to include charitable or welfare work and the administration of residential institutions responding to the immediate needs of those in poverty or distress. Among the institutions developed by Melbourne Citymission were those set up for children and young people separated from their families. Such children are sometimes known as 'Forgotten Australians', following a Senate Enquiry into the impact of residential care on children.
