Annual Homelessness Breakfast

Melbourne Citymission's Annual Homelessness Breakfast is a flagship event held during National Homeless Persons' Week. It's the place to hear 'big ideas', as luminaries from Australian politics, government, business and the not-for-profit sector gather to discuss and debate solutions to homelessness.

The 2008 breakfast was held at Zinc@FedSquare on Thursday 7 August.  Guests enjoyed a hearty breakfast before listening to speeches by Chris White, Chair of the Melbourne Citymission Board and Anne Turley, Melbourne Citymission CEO. An inspiring speech by Tom Waters, from Melbourne Citymission's StepAhead program was well-received by the 250 attendees, as was the screening of Melbourne Citymission's Horn of Africa DVD, which demonstrated how the organisation has been helping young people find pathways to employment.

The morning's main feature though was the panel discussion facilitated by Tim Orton, Managing Director of The Nous Group. The interactive discussion with our five panelists ran for fifty minutes and was full of lively debate on the theme of education, employment and training pathways out of homelessness.

Our panelists were:

The Hon. Brendan O'Connor MP, Federal Minister for Employment Participation
The Hon. Richard Wynne MP, Victorian Minister for Housing and Local Government
Deb Tsorbaris, CEO, Council for Homeless Persons
Linda Rubinstein, Pro Bono Director Holding Redlich
Claire Nyblom, General Manager Youth and Homelessness, Melbourne Citymission
