Christmas appeal
Your generosity in the past has made a vital contribution to the work of Melbourne Citymission. This Christmas, please give again today to ensure that people like Margaret and her family are supported.
Margaret, a part time nurse, cares for the community as well as her 3 sons, two of whom have multiple disabilities. Luke, who is the younger, has cerebral palsy, epilepsy and an intellectual disability. Mathew, 18 years-old, has an intellectual disability. He easily becomes excited and unruly, and needs continual supervision.
As the boys got older, Mathew’s behaviour became impossible to manage. He bullied his younger brother and eventually Steven had to live with his grandparents.
At breaking point, the family was referred to Melbourne Citymission. The first thing Melbourne Citymission did was assess their needs, arrange to have ramps installed for Luke’s wheelchair, as well as counselling and carer support for the family.Melbourne Citymission was also able to find accommodation for Mathew- a supported group home that is suitable to Mathew's needs.
Margaret says, “We are so lucky that a house for Mathew was found. And it means that Steven can come home and have as normal a life as possible. The assistance that we get is absolutely brilliant. Our support worker helps with everything or anything when I am physically and emotionally drained. Melbourne Citymission helps in every possible way.”
Families with a disabled child are struggling because there is simply not enough services. They are battling to find one of the extremely limited supported accommodation places when a child cannot live at home. It is only with the help of people like you that families such as the D’Elia family can live a normal life.
Please give your gift today to support these important services.
