Parent Mentoring

Are you a parent?

Know how tough the job can be?

Got a few hours a week or fortnight to spare?

Melbourne Citymission’s Parenting in Partnership Program needs mums and dads in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs to provide volunteer mentoring for parents with learning difficulties.  Parenting in Partnership volunteers help parents with learning difficulties to grow in confidence, explore new ideas, develop social skills and become more involved in their community.

Volunteers receive training and support to plan activities with the parent, like meeting for a chat, a walk or a coffee.  Simple activities and regular contact with another adult can provide a major stepping-stone for an isolated parent who might have few supports.

Volunteers may support a parent to find new ways of spending positive time with their children, such as going to the zoo, getting involved in a playgroup or joining the local library.  Volunteers can also assist the parent to pursue their own interests, start a course, make new friends or begin their own volunteer work.

Melbourne Citymission is seeking volunteer parent mentors who:

“I had no idea about all the things that are out there, it’s opened up a whole new world, it’s great… Candy is so helpful, we really get on.”
-Lynette, Parenting in Partnership parent participant

“When I heard more about the program I felt it was a great opportunity to use my experience as a parent and my spare time and skills in being with people to good use… volunteering as a mentor parent allowed me to feel useful and productive while spending time with my child…
-Claudia, Parenting in Partnership volunteer parent mentor
