Just another busy day at Frontyard
Previous posts
Today was another busy day at Frontyard. Frontyard is a one-stop shop of eight free services that all work together for young people aged between 12-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Today started with the good news that one of our workers, Julie, who was off sick for a while, will be coming back to work with us soon. The young people who Julie has been working with over the last couple of months were rapped to hear the news that she was getting better.
Meanwhile, Phil, the team leader of Frontyard, was busy trying to find a young person who had gotten himself into trouble. After a couple of hours on the job Phil finally tracked him down. The young person is not in great shape, but when we see him tomorrow we'll see what we can put in place to support him.
We heard that a young woman that we work with is going to two job interviews today, and she also had another one lined up for tomorrow. This was a great boost for the guys at the Job Placement and Employment Training (JPET) program, who support young people to find work.
We also helped a past client who had just gotten out of jail find accommodation. This is the sort of work that Frontyard really specialises in. The young man has mental health problems, drug and alcohol issues as well as poor social skills. Because of the combined resources here at Frontyard, we were able to put our collective thinking caps on to find him somewhere that would be safe for him and others and would support him to get his life back together.
Centrelink weren't here today as they had staff off work sick. We have a Centrelink office in at Frontyard because young people who come in for help can also sort out their Centrelink stuff right here without having to go elsewhere. So not having that option today wasn't great and created a few problems. 19 young people who came in today needed to see Centrelink but we had to direct them to the closest office in south Melbourne.
