Musos 'sing-out' for the homeless
Television personalities, comedians, football stars, and emergency servicemen will be rugging up in PJs and participating in four days of revolving ‘sleep-outs’ in the open-air at QV square to raise money for Melbourne Citymission’s homelessness support services during National Homeless Persons Week as part of the ‘Homeless, not Helpless’ appeal.
Australia’s leading indigenous Jazz vocalist, Liz Cavanagh, is one of several popular Melbourne artists generously volunteering their time to support the Melbourne Citymission ‘Homeless, not Helpless’ appeal by performing in a three hour acoustic gig to be staged at the QV Square on Friday the 5th between 5.30-8.30pm.
Contemplative rock band Girl Pilot, will also be supporting the gig with an unplugged set. The band recently recorded their debut EP at Hothouse studios in St Kilda, with tracks featured in the Melbourne Citymission “Homeless, not Helpless” DVD.
“I come from a family of ten. We were a very poor family…for about two years we were living in the shell of a caravan in a paddock with no power and no running water. So homelessness is an issue I’m personally very familiar with,” says Liz
“My father was a ‘brickie’ and my mother worked in a hospital. They were both very hard working. They worked six days a week but it was tough trying to support eight kids.”
“Being homeless can be demoralising for children. It’s something that stays with you. But it helped me grow and appreciate the importance of being charitable and to appreciate the little things in life. It’s very important thing that we support our community,” says Liz.
“Its great to help out charities and do stuff like that…this year we played the Cystic Fibrosis concert “Rock for the Roses” and had the played with the Screaming Jets, Tex Perkins and Rose Tattoo,” said Sarah Maio, lead vocalist for Girl Pilot. “People need to realise that you don’t choose to become homeless …it kind of just happens.”
