Hume

The area

Professor Tony Vinson's 2007 report into locational disadvantage identified Broadmeadows, in the municipality of Hume, as Victoria's most disadvantaged urban area.

Non-attendance at preschool is one of the major challenges in Broadmeadows.  Unemployment is entrenched and intergenerational, and there are low levels of computer use and Internet access.

Our innovative solutions

Broadmeadows Community Neighbourhood Renewal (BCNR)

BCNR sits within the Victorian Government's social inclusion agenda.  Melbourne Citymission is part of the action team that is driving this initiative.

Learning Club and Breakfast Club

In conjunction with BCNR and the two local primary schools, Meadowbank Primary School and Campmeadows Primary School, we are funding and operating a Learning Club as well as a Walking Bus and breakfast clubs at these schools.

The breakfast clubs don't just provide a healthy start to the day for local children - they are a vehicle for providing pre-vocational activities, training and employment opportunities for local residents who have experienced intergenerational unemployment.

Bridges

Bridges provides community-based activities for elderly people with a disability. We base this service from a house in the midst of a residential community. The setting promotes community inclusion, where neighbours accept participants as valued citizens.
