A great turn out at the HEAT Homeless Longest Lunch

12 April 2017

The HEAT Homeless Longest Lunch took place at Luna Park on Friday 31 March and what a success it was.

Over 250 community members, including those who are experiencing homelessness, enjoyed a delicious three course meal that our very own HEAT students were involved in preparing.

The event which helped kick off the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, takes place every year and aims to highlight the issues surrounding homelessness and disengagement.

People affected by homelessness look forward to this day throughout the year and make sure they have their best outfit lined up for the special day. And this occasion was no different.

One of the guests from the lunch said, 'It was a real treat and I repeat once more “what a treat”. The food and the people I got to meet. I had never imagined the lunch, the company and the hospitality would be so grand. It really was a celebration for the homeless.'

Both students from HEAT and William Angliss were provided with invaluable industry experience as they helped prepare, cook, plate, and serve the food as part of their Certificate II in Hospitality. Even with a hot kitchen and busy environment, students managed to keep their cool and provide an excellent service.

Melbourne City Mission was overwhelmed by the support from the community and partners for this event. A big thank you to our major partners City of Port Phillip, Luna Park, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and Grossi’s who hosted and raised the profile of this years 10th anniversary for the HEAT Homeless Longest Lunch.

We also wish to thank our corporate supporters Grill’d, Sustainable Building Concepts, Complete Function Hire and William Buck for their investment and belief in the HEAT Training students through various initiatives in the lead up to the day and for getting deeply involved at the lunch with their own volunteers on the ground.

Finally of course, the lunch wouldn’t have been a success without our suppliers BidVest, Chef’s Choice, Simon George & Sons, Melbafresh, San Pellegrino, Griffith’s Brothers Coffee and Birkenstock, who all have been with us since our first year event ten years ago, and to all those who purchased a ticket or made a donation in support of this event.
